That's sweet, loom. And gosh, isn't it telling of how odd this year's race has been that it's driving formerly-obsessed people like me away? lol I honestly have no real passion this year and have other stuff going on in the real side of things that put the whole shebang into perspective. I hope there comes a day that another performance like Marion's absolutely blows me away -- now THAT was a great year.

I'm going to be the insensitive one here and say that people are looking too much into it.

It's like when gay people complain that in Battlestar Galactica one of the 'bad guys' was gay. However, it wasn't the only bad character, as everyone had their flaws.

To be honest, I didn't even remember David was a Jew. He was just an opportunistic asshole.

In IB, all characters were iffy on the moral and ethical areas, so not really complaining there.

And A Serious Man, I gotta admit... I didn't really get it, and my first comment was "I think this movie is too Jewish for me to understand". It's like when you watch a Chinese movie with loads of traditions, you won't get the inside joke unless you're Chinese. I felt like that with A Serious Man.

If people want to be pissy about things, why not wonder about that Karate Kid movie where Jackie Chan teaches Kung Fu... funny (or not so funny) thing is the Chinese kids will be the bad guys in that movie.

Besides, isn't like all Hollywood like Jewish? xD

Craig's definitely right about A Serious Man.

In what f'ing world would a film about a young Jewish French woman and a band of Jewish American soldiers taking REVENGE on Hitler and his cronies even be talked about as anti semitic for two bloody seconds???

As Craig pointed out, the Coens are Jewish.

So obviously that doesn't apply.

I just saw AN EDUCATION two nights ago for the third time. This actually shouldn't have happened, since I liked it well enough when I saw it initially last fall. But I didn't care much for the third act or the predictable resolution.

Unlike my darling friend Craig (who felt strongly that the film didn't hold up on a second viewing) I actually enjoyed it more each time. Felt it was a deeper, richer experience.

Never expected that.

Doubt very much that it will end up making my Top 10. But AE has all ready genuinely surprised me in many respects.

Yeah, Craig is definitely on to something. David was more of an outsider because of his religion. But that certainly made him far more attractive and glamorous to Jenny.

When we're kids (especially), circumstances, people and environments that are different can be enormously compelling.

And considering the way her father was spouting off initially, her parents were completely under David's spell within the first few seconds. They were utterly enthralled with him.

It's not like Jewish = bad.

It's more like he was a jackass that HAPPENED to be Jewish. David could have easily been an upper crust WASP. That is completely incidental.

I haven't read Lynn Barber's memoir. But I assume the older lover that she had as a teenager (who nearly ruined her life) was Jewish in reality and not just a product of Nick Hornby's script.

Portions of that article made me laugh.

The awesome Sally Hawkins (who played David's wife - and who knows definitively if she was actually Jewish...?) was far from dowdy.

Jenny (as played by Carey Mulligan)was merely cute. She wasn't exactly a sex bomb.

I thought David's wife was a lot more attractive. Dowdy, my sweet ass.

With all due respect, I don't think that that woman had any business commenting on or writing about AN EDUCATION when she didn't see the entire film. How the hell is her opinion at all valid if she walked out in the middle of it?

You would think with a first name like Irina (*chesire cat wink*) that she would have had some serious intelligence and class.

So, yeah...

I definitely feel all of this faux outrage has to do with someone attempting to stir something up. Or else they were facing a deadline.

None of this nonsense hits the target in any way, shape or form.

I'm personally inclined to defend the Jewish community whenever possible. My mama apprenticed with tailors when she was very young. She knew a lot of Jewish people and she thought they were wonderful.

I had such a crush on Richard Dreyfuss growing up that I always said that IF I ever got married (and that was a bloody big IF...) that I would only marry a smart mouthed blue eyed Jewish boy.

I'd be highly amused (but definitely delighted) if it actually shook out that way.

As for A Serious Man. It comes out on DVD next Tuesday. Stick it in your Netflix queue chop chop! Also, let's not forget that the Coens ARE Jewish for starters. Whatever issues they have with the ability of the traditions of Judaism to solve the problems of a confusing modern world are no different than mine over the traditions of Catholicism in the same situation.

If they find Judaism to be a little ineffectual, it's not antisemitism, it's their experience and their right.

There is plenty of bigotry and evil in this world and people need to save their ammo for when it rears its head for real and stop bitching about every little thing in a movie. It's counterproductive to the cause against racism, sexism and homophobia.

David's Jewishness in An Education is never used as evidence or the cause of his evilness. It simply makes him an outsider which further ups the stakes of the choices Jenny makes in the context of England in the 1960s. Makes her parents more fearful while making David more interesting in her eyes.

This was my exact take on that character. Not only that, but several characters (the father, the school mistress) make openly anti-Semitic comments. In the father's case, even before David comes into the picture. These comments served to enforce David's otherness and how his community was perceived by some. How exactly this translates into the perpetuation of stereotypes, I don't understand. Was the guy an opportunistic scumbag? Yes, but that was not due to his religion/ethnicity/background. I never got that feeling from the film.

I haven't seen "A Serious Man," but I agree that "IB" needs to be crossed off the list -- I mean, come on.

There were some surprises, but not anything really big. I suppose the biggest story is the lack of dominance by Avatar, which some had feared.

Next, Maggie Gyllenhaal's nomination. Though I loved Diane Kruger's work in IB and Julianne Moore in A Single Man (accent or no accent), I have to say that Gyllenhaal did a fine job in Crazy Heart, and it helped make that film. Bridges may have helped her get her nomination, but she helped him round out his performance.

I was also a bit surprised by the strong showing of animated films in general, and also the screenplay nod for In the Loop, which I hear is deserved.

To be honest, I didn't enjoy The Hangover, but since it was received with positive reviews, won a GG and did well commercially, I gave it a spot.

I really do prefer dark horses to win stuff because then I get to discover them... smaller films are the ones in need of awards publicity.

Jeez, that's just painful to read through. Think of all the millions spent producing and marketing those films, not to mention their box-office numbers. Yikes.

I thought 2009 was a pretty disappointing movie year in general, so it was a little comforting when the Razzies founder apparently joked that there were enough mad movies this year to warrant an Oscar-like doubling of Worst Picture nominees. Certainly Knowing and 2012 would have to be included if that were the case. Personally I also hated Couples Retreat, The Box, The International, The Taking of Pelham 123, Friday the 13th, New York, I Love You, and if I'm going to be brutally honest - The Blind Side and The Hangover...

I am not surprised Dorothy by this choice, as I feel she headed for an Oscar win. And in all probability THE HURT LOCKER will win Best Picture, with AVATAR as the only real contender. But this is a victory - finally - for the woman as director.
