Every year I look forward to the live results of the NYFCC's voting rounds, but alas, this year they went stingy on us and are not doing things the usual way, but rather we'll have to wait until 1:00 p.m. EST today for their picks.
The NYFCC is an interesting group. They get a lot of grief for being pretty exclusive and, at times, snobbish, but I don't care, I love those weirdoes and their sometimes idiosyntratic choices. Having said that, I have a feeling that this year they will stick close to the pack with their choices. Compared with prior years, there really aren't that many fantastic films to choose from, which may result in a more uniform year across the critic groups than we've seen recently.
Enough babbling, here are my predictions for this year's NYFCC awards:
Best Film: The White Ribbon
Best Director: Michael Haneke, The White Ribbon
Best Actress: Carey Mulligan, An Education
Best Actor: Colin Firth, A Single Man
Best Screenplay: A Serious Man
Best Cinematography: The White Ribbon
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Waltz, Inglourious Basterds
Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique, Precious
Best Animated Film: Up
Best First Film: The Hurt Locker
Best Foreign Film: The White Ribbon
Best Non-Fiction Film (Documentary): The Cove
I'm expecting to go 0/12.
