The upcoming awards season just got a little bit more exciting for us here at ITG. One of our patron saints, Ricky Gervais, will be hosting the next Golden Globes ceremony:
It's about time: Funnyman Ricky Gervais has been tapped to host the 67th Annual Golden Globes.
People.com confirmed the big news Monday morning. The British comedian and creator-star of the original U.K. edition of "The Office" will be the night's first emcee since 1995. The Globes will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 17.
“Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry, which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host," Gervais said. "I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down."
"We are delighted to have Ricky Gervais as the host on our show," said Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.
Gervais has won three Golden Globes. In 2008, his HBO show "Extras" was named best TV comedy.
Being a Gervais fanatic, I'm ecstatic about this bit of news (though I wish old boy had been chosen for the Oscar gig instead). What could possibly make this better? Some banter with Stephen Merchant.

The Globes are kind of a farce, but they made me very happy last year with La Winslet's double win. As to live-blogging it, I certainly hope so. As I'm sure you can tell, we've been sort of off the last couple of months. It really sucks :( I'm hoping that things slow down at work very, very soon (and just in time for the season!). You will surely be a guest of honor if we do go ahead and live blog the GGs, Craig :D

Kate's double win was a big surprise :O - I've noticed the inactivity over ItG... I thought I'd remind you of my award experiments =D - I just recently completed 48 films this year! So now I can vote, woohoo!
I must say I am a big fan of Gervais too and would love to see him host the Oscars to be honest. I know you will be back in the loop Dorothy, you are sorely missed.
Gervais seems like a good fit for the Globes. I'm looking forward to this year's show, which always seems more fun than the Oscars because the Globes don't take themselves so gosh-darned seriously.
