I have no idea how I feel about this . . . must compute, but thought I'd share with you:
The next Oscars derby will be more heated – and crowded. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences just announced that the best picture race will now include 10contenders instead of the usual five.
Is this real life? What are your thoughts on this? My thoughts after the jump.
I think it's a good thing -- it opens the race up to more contenders and thereby there will be less sore feelings when the announcements are made. Still, a part of me cherishes the bitching that goes on when favorites are slighted. But that tells you more about me than about the Oscar race!

Is this real life? Is this gonna be forever?
I think it's a horrible idea. Don't like it at all.
My thoughts:
Unless the Academy finds a way to put a cap on the amount of money studios are allowed to spend on campaign ads, and/or figure out a better way to deal with animated and foreign language films, the same exact types of films will be nominated.
Well, now we can look forward to the likes of "Transformers" and "The Proposal" getting nominated! Talk about D-R-A-M-A in our midst!
Maybe now Eastwood can get multiple BP nominations!
LOL
I love how we can freak out about this.
This was my reaction...
WHAT????
I don't like the idea, I mean... I like the idea of possibly having more films as Best Picture nominees, but I hate the idea that so many independent, foreign and animated films will be snubbed.
If this is the case, you might be able to get UP as a BP nominee, which isn't a problem, but not all summer flicks are Up.
Now, if only they decided to open their foreign race (to more than one entry per country), that would be my dream come true and I wouldn't need my Experiment Awards, xD
If this is the case, you might be able to get UP as a BP nominee, which isn't a problem, but not all summer flicks are Up.
*DP applauds wildly*
By the way, one great possible effect of this is that we (presumably) would not have to worry about the archaic foreign language film restrictions: I think this opens up the doors for a lot of those SHOULD HAVE BEENs (e.g., 4M3W2D), so we may have a lot of stuff that cannnot be recognized in the Foreign Language category honored in the Best Picture slot. I don't know, I'm hopeful about it.
I have mixed feelings about it, haha.
Yes, it would be ideal for films like 4Months to get a BP nod (and she deserved an acting one, as well) - but the cynic in me tells me Foreign Films will still be Foreign Films as long as there's a Foreign Film category. LOL - and as long as they only let one film per country entry... and even worse, not letting a film that has a bunch of countries (which seems to be so much more common now) producing.
I agree with you on stuff like 4Months, siutou_amy, and I hope you're right. But the negative alternative is that this may not open the category up to great foreign films like that; it may just mean 10 of the same types of films Oscar always goes for in the line-up instead of 5 (dramas, biopics, message movies, etc).
What I meant to say is I agree with Dorothy on the positive possibilities and with siutou_amy on the negative alternative that could possibly happen instead. Haven't had coffee yet.
And I thought 4-3-2 was no question one of the top films of its year.
I think the same, Alison.
I mean, there's a possibility that, for some crazy reason, a film like Transformers could make it to the list.
O.o
I mean, what is the reason of this announcement? Ratings? Staying relevant is tough when you hear/read people saying "why is a film I haven't even heard of named Best Picture?"
I'm all for opening it up to mo' better movies, but if Star Trek and The Hangover get nominations, I'm not watching the show this year.
All I'm saying.
But Craig, yours is a much appreciated presence at our live chat.
If they're going to be this boneheaded, then I think they should nominate THE HANGOVER for BEST PICTURE.
Did I love it? YEAH.
Is it great? It's not LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. But for a genre picture in summer relase (especially), it's superbly made: smartly written, well acted and hysterically, deliciously FUNNY.
It's really, really good.
Should it have ever made it into the final five in years gone by? HELL NO.
It's not the classic prestigious, gloomily serious ACADEMY AWARD attracting opus.
But if they're going to be asinine enough to open up the field to 10, PUT THE HANGOVER IN THERE.
For Christ's sake. Do something right for a change.
PLEASE.
And Craig will come, k.
Believe me.
I'll make it worth his while...
K, I wouldn't miss the ItG live chat for the world. Maybe I could still play without watching the show?
Wouldn't be quite the same, would it?
