Hello, everyone who still reads ITG. I have a request of all of you.
Writing my review of Made of Honor has been taking a long time. Mostly, I was just getting angry about it for reasons I couldn't understand... then it hit me. There was nothing original about the film. There was so little effort or originality that went into it, that I started to get upset that the film was even made.
Sure, you could say this about most films that come out these days (it feels like a new remake is released every month), but there's something about the romantic comedy that really gets to me. Maybe it's because they are widely considered "chick flicks", and as a woman, I feel like I deserve better.
I feel like romantic comedies haven't always been so bad, so I am going to try and figure out where, exactly, the romantic comedy went so horrible wrong.
So in the comments (anonymously if you want to), list romantic comedies. Good ones, bad ones, guilty pleasures... don't tell me why you think they are good or bad, just give me the titles. I will watch whatever you throw at me, and put up my thoughts here.

Hello K.
I wouldn't fret about 'originality' as your own work will always come off as 'original' to your readers.
As to some suggestions, well, my favorite 'romantic comedy' of them all is none other than:
CITY LIGHTS (Chaplin, 1930)
But these are priceless too:
SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (Lubitsch, 1940)
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (Capra, 1934)
A LITTLE ROMANCE (Hill, 1979)
and these are fine too:
GHOST
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
MARTY
GHOST TOWN (mentioned by Amy above)
WOW...
Amy's comment is a tough act to follow. But I'm gonna take a slightly different tack.
I've only picked ones that are good to excellent (in my estimation), that I think you'll genuinely enjoy and that I HOPE you haven't seen.
Maybe you'll find these helpful, k.
So I'll hit the ground running.
Stilettos intact...
ADDICTED TO LOVE (MEG RYAN/MATTHEW BRODERICK - subversive as HELL...)
ALFIE (both versions: MICHAEL CAINE - 1966 & JUDE LAW - 2004)
ALICE (WOODY ALLEN)

VICTOR/VICTORIA
WHAT'S UP DOC?
I always enjoyed While You Were Sleeping.
One of my favorites from last year (or two years ago now, I guess) - 2 Days in Paris.
I see some good examples here.
It's true that a lot of romantic comedies reflect outdated attitudes about sex and gender of their era. Without making judgments, here are some:
Annie Hall
Shakespeare in Love
It Happened One Night
The Lady Eve
Woman of the Year
Pillow Talk
The Bride Came C.O.C.
Moonstruck
Romancing the Stone
Some Like It Hot
Legaly Blonde
Jerry Mcguire
Pretty Woman
Roman Holiday
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
The Princess Diaries
There's Something About Mary
Father of the Bride
It Could Happen to You
Adam's Rib
The Object of My Affection
The Thrill of it All
Indiscreet
As Good as it Gets
Roxanne
Sabrina
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Mrs. Doubtfire
P.S. I Love You
Oh Men! Oh Women!
Cactus Flower
Miss Congeniality
My Favorite Wife
Pillow Talk
The Palm Beach Story
Oops! Typo patrol spotted an error on my previous list. It should be:
The Bride Came C.O.D. (Bette Davis)
Also: The Major and the Minor (Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland in a '40s comedy where -- in case you haven't seen it -- Rogers plays a woman pretending to be 12 years old!)
I don't know if they're useful for your purpose, but anyway.
Every Girl Should Be Married.
It's a movie I caught yesterday on a local TV station (local meaning one thousand viewers tops). Starring Cary Grant and Betsy Drake. I believe it's one of those movies that don't air frequently. No wonder why, its message is really old and quite blatantly delivered, Cary Grant (as charming as usual) is just sleepwalking and the chemistry with his partner is just non-existent. Somehow enjoyable though.
El amor perjudica seriamente la salud.
If you can speak Spanish, this is a romantic comedy from the 90s with a younger Penélope Cruz (not the main lead). The movie is charming, screwball-like and glamorous (?). I loved it at the time and every time it's on Tv I get hooked. It's a bit uneven as the 2 main characters are played by 4 different thespians, but worth seeing if available.
Love Actually
Shall We Kiss?
Apres Vous
Priceless
It's been a while, but I thought I'd pimp this post here xD
