Oscar Hopes

It's that time of the year again. The New York Times just published a great article on Oscar contenders, paying considerable lip to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (which right now sits comfortably at the top of my "must-see" list). Here's an interesting tidbit (considering the films are quite a long way from being released):

Some publicists who specialize in Oscar campaigns are privately predicting a year-end shootout between “Button” and “Frost/Nixon,” a planned December release from Universal Pictures, directed by Ron Howard and with Michael Sheen and Frank Langella in the title roles. The films have been seen by few, but the campaign machinery is already lining up behind them.

Other contenders include: Eastwood's "Changeling," with Angelina Jolie, “Australia,” with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, "The Soloist," with Robert Downey, Jr., and “Seven Pounds,” with Will Smith. The article, however, fails to mention one of the stronger contenders: "Revolutionary Road."

Nice piece here Dorothy!

The best American films this year so far in my opinion are Todd McCarthy's THE VISITOR and the animated WALL-E. Oddly, despite deserved spectacular reviews in the professional ranks, our little blogging circle have not wholly embraced them. But I respect their positions no less.

BUTTON may have the upper-hand over FROST/NIXON, as even though it was based on a hugely successful Broadway play, it was directed by the pedestrian Ron Howard. I will see THE CHANGELING on Sunday, so I guess the proof will be in the pudding. AUSTRALIA may have some winning chemistry with Jackman and Kidman, and THE SOLOIST has Downey, who does seem to be on a roll. I'm skeptical about the Will Smith, but REVOLUTIONARY ROAD is definitely the sleeper here.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have not seen either The Visitor or Wall-E. I really wanted to see both, but was too lazy to get off my butt. I'm heading over to Netflix to see when they'll be released so I can add them to my cue, stat.

Please let me know what you think of "The Changeling." I wasn't too sold on it until I saw the trailer a couple of weeks back. I love the retro feel and while I'm hot and cold with Eastwood, when I like one of his films, I *really* like it.

Just checked: The Visitor comes out next week! (it's at the top of my queue right now). Sadly, I'll have to wait a bit longer for WALL-E, though (early November).

Great news there on THE VISITOR'S upcoming release! I will definitely let you know about THE CHANGELING!

Dorothy, see THE VISITOR if you can.

I have no idea if you'd like it.

But I saw it twice and I gave it four stars. Review's over at CP if you want to take a look.

I can't believe I overlooked this film when it first came out. Shame on me. I look forward to reading your review, Ms. M! I'm getting more and more excited about watching it.
