Trailer for Australia

As my dear Ray Davies would say, Opportunities are available in all walks of life in Australia. In any case, here's the trailer for Baz Luhrmann's epic "Australia," starring Ms. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Not the best quality but it'll have to do until the "official" one is released later this week.

It looks visually delectable, but I couldn't help but think "Far and Away." And "Cold Mountain." With a dash of "Atonement." Not necessarily a bad thing, I suppose.

D, the video is not working. I'm getting the "Sorry, this video is no longer available" message that I get sometimes when I attempt to embed on site.

Just a bit of FYI from the glamourous Irish broad over at CP...

It doesn't work here, but I saw it yesterday...

I remain unimpressed. Lurhmann is one of my least favorite directors, but I'll reserve final judgment on Australia until I actually see the film.

I'm thinking this is going to pick up massive steam toward the end of the year. There don't seem to be many other period epics for this year's Oscars, unless my radar is off.

I don't know about period epics, but there are a few notable period films coming out this year... Revolutionary Road, The Reader, The Young Victoria, The Duchess, The Edge of Love...

I'm with you K. I wonder about the marriage of classic movie romance/adventure with Lurhmann's, for me, excessive stylization. Still, plenty see more than form dominating substance in his earlier work so perhaps this will be a winning formula.

Yes, that's exactly my problem with Luhrmann; his films are all style over substance. The way his films look are planned and executed almost perfectly, but his writing is sorely lacking in any real depth. There's a lot of superficiality with his films and not a lot going on underneath. Maybe Australia will prove me wrong, but right now I'm unimpressed.

Dorothy, it's so funny you opened the post with that song because I instantly started humming it as soon as I saw the title of your post. Kinks fans rule!

That is awesome, Craig! Great minds :P

I have to say, "Arthur..." has become my favorite Kinks album. It took a while for it to knock "The Kinks are the Village Green..." off the top spot, but I just find it irresistible. "Part One Lola versus the Powerman" is a close third.

In fact, I find all of their concept recordings (except for a few from the 70s, like "Soap Opera," yikes!) to be masterpieces. Long live Ray! :)

Amen to that.

THE KINKS (the beloved Ray in particular) are genuises in a sea of pretenders.

How can the Brits be so completely awesome? Between the 60s and now, it's almost mind blowing...

Went over to YouTube and had a gander.

Hmmm...

Tough to say. Looks epic. If nothing else...
